Situated in a suggestive area called Valdichiana, among the hills of Siena and the Trasimeno Lake, Lucignano is a unique suburb in its way: it is one of the most extraordinary examples of medieval urbanism because of its elliptical plant with concentric rings, and whose lanes meet on the summit in which the main Church, the Collegiata of St. Michele Arcangelo, takes place; also the church-square has a circular shape.

Here in Lucignano the visitors have the opportunity to admire beautiful churches and art works. The most important work is the Albero d’Oro (The Golden Tree or The Lovers’ Tree); this is a tree-shaped relic dated about 1350, unique for its value and its manufacture, and preserved in the Municipal Museum of Lucignano.

The legend tells that two lovers, holding their hands, can exchange their promise of true love in front of the tree.

The most exigent people can please their palates trying typical local products thanks to the productions of esteemed wines, genuine olive oils, salted meat and the well-known Chianina steak.

Due to its favourable position, it is easy to reach many interesting cultural cities of the Valdichiana area:
Cortona, the noble city founded by the Etruscans become worldly famous thanks to Frances Mayes’ book “Under the Tuscan Sun” and the same titled Hollywood movie shot in the city. Let’s not forget the Sanctuary of Le Celle, where St. Francis lived; the mediaeval villages of Castiglion Fiorentino and Monte San Savino, and Arezzo, a major Italian goldsmiths centre home of Piero della Francesca, whose masterpieces are the frescoes painted in the church of San Francesco, “The Legend of the True Cross”. Then, you can not miss the Saracen Joust, a medieval event that takes places twice a year in the central square Piazza Grande.

Other valleys in the province of Arezzo are easily reachable. In addition, you could visit important Tuscan or Umbrian cities such as Florence, Siena, Perugia and Assisi and so on..
